課程概述

Outline: A practical workshop in the craft and technique of translating fine contemporary Taiwan poetry into English that functions successfully as a poem. Such translation leads not only to new publication, but since English is the gateway to appearance in other languages, enlarges Taiwan's international literary presence. Participants will be both personally and collectively engaged in the process of building and refining this work. Instructors, one an American poet, the other a native-Chinese speaker, are winners of a U.S. National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Translation. They have created and published their renderings of Chinese-language poetry since 2005, and together direct the cross-cultural poetry and art journal, Pangolin House. Students should be literary-minded, have good written English, and be ready for hands-on practice.

課程目標
Course Objectives:
Following initial introductory lectures and analysis of examples, students will receive weekly short selections from contemporary Taiwan Chinese language poetry to translate into English. Excerpts from student translations will then be distributed for subsequent class discussion and collective refinement. Subject to change and adjustment, we will address poems by Yang Mu, Ya Xian, Shang Qin, Chen Yuhong, Chen Yizhi, Xia Yu, Ling Yu, Luo Zhicheng, Chen Li, and others.
